My fixation with all things Tim Burton is usually kept under wraps pretty well. I mean, anyone who knows me knows I’m nuts for Nightmare Before Christmas first and foremost. But I have yet to find a Burton film I haven’t loved.
Back in 2oo4 I made Bryce and Maeve’s Halloween costumes-Jack & Sally. My first and last attempt to make something with, well, clothes. That is until now.
This Halloween, I had to somehow express my crazed excitement for the upcoming release of Alice in Wonderland. And what better way than to make our Halloween costumes this year? So this Halloween, Bob is will be The Mad Hatter, and I will be The Queen of Hearts.
Now sure, we could have taken the easy road and bought those pre-made costumes, especially with the wide variety of naughty queens out there. But that wasn’t the look I was going for, I want it to be somewhat creepy and more Burtonized. and cheap.
To me, that mean handmade. Sort Of.
So I have picked up all of my queen materials except the corset. 2 visits to Goodwill ($8) Michael’s ($10) and my tights ($11.95). The only thing I still need to buy is the wig, everything else will be made somehow. Now of course it won’t be exact because I can’t put THAT much effort into this, but it will be close.
Today I finished Part I. The skirt.
Me, tea, a remote, dvr’ed shows, sharpie, fabric paint, and a $3 skirt.
I’m still thinking I may hit Goodwill for some kind of gold fabric for a train, or Hobby Lobby for something that looks like gothic curtains but we will see.
I also started the Mad Hatter jacket and as soon as it’s complete, I’ll post it.
Wish me luck!

you kick ass
Of course I do!
i love it!! you are awesome!
The top is almost done, but where the frig am I going to find a cheap corset? I guess my ass of gonna be off to walmart!
Thanks, Jody!
So the only thing left on the top to do is the velvet, and I picked up a black corset for $14 at Walmart. I'll embellish it with jewels etc that will be removable too so I could reuse it…tomorrow I should be able to post it!
Also making a queen of hearts costume but it won't look as good as yours. Queen of Hearts in the recent Tim movie, is more vintage.. Your rock! Cannot wait to see the end result!
I don't know how great it will look but at least I'm trying! I wish I was a seamstress!
Do you have an updated photo of how your costume is going? I also wish I was a seamstress at this point!
of course!
